A report of the UMBC AI Strategy Task Force on how the university should engage artificial intelligence across research, education, operations, and service to the state.
Charged by the Provost, the Task Force worked through four campus workgroups between November 2025 and May 2026. The resulting report sets out a vision for AI at UMBC, a set of guiding principles grounded in institutional values, strategic directions in teaching and learning, research and creative achievement, administrative and operational practice, and workforce development, and a path toward implementation that includes governance, risk management, and assessment.
Its central commitment is to examine AI critically rather than to accept or resist it wholesale: to evaluate applications on evidence, to recognize that appropriate use differs sharply across disciplines and contexts, and to keep human judgment and accountability at the center of how the university adopts these tools, and recognize the faculty and staff labor that goes into using and adapting to these technologies.

Status. The report has been submitted to the Provost and the President and is under consideration. It presents recommendations; nothing in it has yet been adopted as university policy.

Comment
The report leaves several questions deliberately open for the constituent senates and for continued campus discussion.
