New UMBC course on the philosophy of Artificial Intelligence

The UMBC Philosophy department has added a new oourse, Philosophy of AI (PHIL 378), to the Fall 2025 class schedule. The course will be taught by Philosophy faculty Jessica Pfeifer and Greg Ealick, who will explore the philosophical foundations and implications of Artificial Intelligence. The class will meet MWF at 11 in PAHB 229.

Philosophy 378 will examine core questions about the nature of AI, such as: What is AI? What is the relationship between AI and scientific knowledge? How can bias in AI be addressed? Can AI predict, influence, or even control human behavior? What is the relationship between mind and machine? Can AI replicate human capacities for cognition, creativity, and consciousness? And what is the future of human-AI interactions?
