Centers & Resources

The 2018 and 2021 portions of taki with Dr. Gobbert and HPCF RA Mostafa Cham.

Research Resources

High-Performance Computing Facility

UMBC’s High-Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) is the community-based, interdisciplinary core facility for scientific computing and research on parallel algorithms at UMBC. HPCF currently consists of two systems: Taki and Ada, both of which have multiple machines with GPUs.

Research Institutes and Centers

Several research centers have projects with multiple research projects that apply AI technology, machine learning, and advanced data analytics.

NSF Funded Big Data REU Site

This REU site has been funded by the NSF since 2021 to conduct undergraduate research training on using modern data science and high-performance computing to process and analyze big data in many science and engineering disciplines. This program is conducted purely online to allow students to conduct research without traveling and to collaborate with experts nationwide.

Center for Accelerated Real-Time Analytics

CARTA is an NSF-funded Industry/University Cooperative Research Center that includes UMBC, Rutgers, North Carolina State, and the University of Miami. It works with next-generation hardware technologies to build cognitive analytics systems and active storage. CARTA’s goal is to build an ecosystem for real-time analytics research through research, education, and training that uses innovative technologies such as AI, cognitive computing, machine learning, and quantum computing.

Center for Real-time Distributed Sensing and Autonomy

CARDS is part of ArtIAMAS,  a cooperative agreement between the Army Research Laboratory and the University of Maryland that supports and stimulates the advancement of science and technology in robotics, systems, and smart devices that work intelligently in cooperation with each other and human actors across multiple domains. ArtIAMAS seeks to accelerate the field deployment of long-duration multi-agent systems that can perform multi-domain operations and dominate contested, complex environments.

Center for Cybersecurity

UMBC’s Center for Cybersecurity provides unified interdisciplinary academic and research leadership, partnership, innovation, and outreach in this critical discipline by streamlining our academic, research, workforce development, and technology incubation activities. Through UCYBR, UMBC is one of the few universities in the nation designated both a Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) and Cyber Research (CAE-R) by the National Security Agency and been a prominent NSF Federal CyberCorps/SFS participant since 2012.

HDR Institute for Harnessing Data and Model Revolution in the Polar Regions

iHARP is the NSF HDR Institute for Harnessing Data and Model Revolution in the Polar Regions. Its goal is to advance our understanding of the response of polar regions to climate change and its global impacts by deeply integrating data science and polar science to spur physics-informed, data-driven discoveries.

The Hilltop Institute

The Hilltop Institute is a nonpartisan research organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of people and communities. It conducts cutting-edge data analytics and translational research on behalf of government agencies, foundations, and nonprofit organizations to inform national, state, and local public policy. Hilltop is committed to addressing complex issues through informed, objective, and innovative research and analysis.
